Gertie Adams

Annie Gertrude "Gertie" Adams, 91, of Fredericksburg died Monday, May 20, 2013 at the Laurels of Bon Air in Richmond.Mrs. Adams was a member of the first graduating class of Caroline High School in 1941. She attended evening business classes at Mary Washington College. She secured her first job as a bookkeeper for Goolrick's Drug Store. Gertie and her husband, Joe, owned and operated Joe's Snack Bar. She later worked as an accounts clerk for Mary Washington Hospital.She served as a deacon and taught Sunday school for more than 60 years as a member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star 29, Rescue Squad Auxiliary, and Elks Auxiliary. Mrs. Adams served as a volunteer at Mary Washington Hospital starting out with the Grey Ladies in the late 1940s and continuing to serve with the Pink Ladies until 2010.Mrs. Adams was the widow of Joe Adams. Survivors include her sons, Jimmy of Fredericksburg and Franklin and his wife, Dianne of Bon Air; five grandsons and seven great grandchildren.A service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
