Herbert Daniel Northern, Sr., 84, of Fredericksburg, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at his home.
Mr. Northern was born August 15, 1927, in Richmond County, Virginia. He was a graduate of Warsaw High School and the Virginia State Police Academy. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served aboard the USS Earnest G. Small in the Mediterranean at the conclusion of World War II. After 37 1/2 years of service, he retired from the Virginia State Police as Captain and then had another 20 year career as supervisor of safety and security for Wilson Trucking Corporation. He was a member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church, past president of the Virginia State Police Alumni Association, and past president of the Rappahannock Fraternal Order of Police Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Hildegarde Coates Northern, and his brothers Marshall Bernard Northern and Roland Franklin Northern.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lea Northern; three sons, Herbert Daniel Northern, Jr. and his wife, Debbie of Woodstock, William Linwood Northern and his wife, Nancy, of Lexington, Kentucky, and Robert Benjamin Northern and his wife, Donna, of Fredericksburg; seven grandchildren, Melissa Northern, Kristen Northern Hepner and her husband, Joshua, and their children Jackson and Claire, Duke Dodson and his wife, Jessica, and their son Tripp, Ben Northern, Ann Northern, Nick Northern, and Makenzie Northern; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
A service will be held at noon Friday, Aug. 17, at Fredericksburg Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Members of the Virginia State Police will serve as pallbearers.
I will truly miss Herb and his monthly safety trips to my terninal here in Winchester. He was a great man and always had a joke for us. We will miss you, sir! God Bless your family at this time.
Everyone will miss Herb. We both worked for Wilson Trucking and always enjoyed seeing Herb at various events. God Bless and you are in our thoughts and prayers.
I have had the great pleasure of working with Herb for the past 23 years . He was a great co-worker and friend to us all at Wilson Trucking Co . Rest in peace my friend you will be missed !

“Mr. Northern” touched many lives and we count it a blessing that we were among those touched. Praying for peace and comfort for you, his family, knowing that now he is home with his Lord.
Mary Lea, Danny, Linwood, Bobby and families~ My sincere sympathy in the loss of this community spirited and involved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. I first met you, Mary Lea, through THEOS and then more recently at Ami Abousaleh’s chair in Creative Clippers. My heart goes out to you in the loss of your stalwart and Christian husband. I remember your Dad from many years ago as a State Trooper, when both you and I were younger, living in Fredericksburg, and members of Ferry Farm Baptist Church. He was such a nice Christian man, a person everyone could look up to and did. I am so sorry for you loss and will keep you and your family in my prayers. God Bless you all.

Our good neighbor behind us with the beautiful garden will be missed. He gave a lift to us as we exchanged good morning and talked about this and that. Our dog Reily will miss him also as he barked when Herbert was out on the deck. God bless him .
Danny, Linwood and families, I was so very sorry to hear about Mr. Northern’s passing. I know how much pain and loss you are feeling, because we just lost my Dad, Leroy Gardner, in February, and I still can’t believe that He is gone. We can all take comfort though, that they are in a better place, but it is still hard. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family. God Bless you all…….
I have wonderful memories of growing up with Uncle Herbert. I know he is at peace now. The brothers are back together now.
