Laura Kay Smith, 59, of King George, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Laura was born on May 26, 1964, in Clinton, Iowa, to Gary and Carol Edlen. She graduated from James Bowie High School and went on the earn her Bachelors degree in General Studies from Louisiana State University. During her academic journey, Laura forged lifelong friendships with Sara and Kari; whom she remained lifelong friends with and loved dearly. Laura married Randall Smith in 1987 and later separated in 2017.

Known for her boundless empathy and affection for others, Laura dedicated her career to social work, focusing on empowering others to be successful. Additionally, Laura was a fierce animal lover. She dedicated countless hours to volunteering with Janet’s Rescue and Placements, assisting at adoption events and providing foster care for dogs awaiting their forever homes.

Crafting brought Laura immense joy throughout her life, whether she was designing her own jewelry or creating beautiful home decorations. In her leisure time, she found solace in listening to self-help podcasts and contributing her time to a local food bank, where she formed cherished friendships.

Laura loved being a mother and grandmother and expressing her immense pride in her children to anyone she met. 

Laura is survived by her loving daughters, Katie and Alyssa Smith; son-in-law, Mike; cherished grandchildren, Sophia, Alexander, and Leo; mother Carol Moore; younger sister, Natalie Hester; step-mother Ione Edlen; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gary Edlen; brother James "Jim" Edlen; and step-father, Thomas Moore.

Her compassion and kindness touched countless lives, and she will be deeply missed. In honoring Laura's memory, let us carry forward her legacy of love, compassion, and service to others.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home chapel.
