Albert Lee Guber, 85, of Fredericksburg died on January 16th, 2021.
Al was married to his late wife, Nancy Marie, for fifty-two years. He and his family resided in Boalsburg, PA for forty-eight years. He served on the faculty of the Department of Geosciences for thirty-four years and retired in 1996 as Professor Emeritus of Geology. He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in State College, PA. Al and Nancy moved to Virginia in 2010 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Al was born in Heidelburg, PA, received a B.S. from the University of Pittsburg in 1958 and a PhD in Geology from the University of Illinois in 1962. He held a National Science Foundation Fellowship for post-doctoral studies for six months at the University of Stockholm and six months at the Imperial College in London before joining the Penn State faculty in 1963. While at Penn State, he served various administrative, research and teaching roles. He was the recipient of Penn State’s highest teaching awards, but was best known as the developer and director of Penn State’s Marine Sciences Program offered off-campus at Wallops Island, VA. He was a member of several professional societies, authored various research papers and was a Fellow of the Geological Society of America.
Al was an accomplished amateur wine maker and ranked among the American Wine Society’s top fifteen amateurs for several years. He enjoyed teaching about wine and wine making and offered Wine Appreciation 101 more recently to members of his Virginia Heritage community. Al was a Master Gardner and specialized in fruit and vegetable gardening. He enjoyed giving talks about his favorite topic-growing Fall vegetables. Al, along with his late wife, Nancy, loved sports in general and attended or ardently followed Penn State and Pittsburg sport teams’ events.
Al is survived by his daughter, Lisa D’Albis (Michael); his son, Albert Lynn Guber (Kendra); a sister, Marlene Gibson of Pittsburg, PA; and his five granddaughters, Alexandra, Brianna, Olivia, Chenin, and Kate.
At Al’s request no memorial service will be held.
