Tribute

Barbara McPhatter Kendall, 86, of Fredericksburg, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. 

Born in Fredericksburg, Barbara graduated from Stafford High School and from Fredericksburg Area School of Practical Nursing. Barbara was employed by Fredericksburg City Public Schools retiring as a school nurse for Hugh Mercer Elementary School.

Barbara was a devoted charter member of St. Matthias United Methodist Church, serving many years as their church pianist and organist. Her love of music was also expressed through her participation in the church choir and handbell ensemble. Barbara loved her family deeply and enjoyed spending time with them, especially during the holidays and on their many camping trips. She was an accomplished seamstress and also enjoyed needlework projects, antique cars, ancestry research, and volunteering with the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program.

Survivors include her children, Edward P. Kendall of Fredericksburg, Lynette K. Farmer of Fredericksburg, Gary F. Kendall (Sarah) of Christiansburg, and Charles M. "Chuck" Kendall (Beth Moore) of Woodbridge; a daughter of the heart, Susan K. Siltz (Joe) of Disputanta; grandchildren Sean L. Farmer (Niki), Ross E. Farmer (Amie), Edward P. Kendall, Jr. (Kate), K. Grace Kendall (Mike Belsole), Adam C. Kendall (Courtney), D. Drew Kendall, Benjamin C. Kendall (Chelsea), and Katherine E. “Beth” O'Dea (Duggan); step-granddaughter Maria E. Siltz; great-grandchildren Lilah Farmer, Samantha Farmer, Lucy Farmer, Harrison Kendall, Charlotte Kendall, Palmer Kendall, and Josephine “Josie” O'Dea; step-great-grandson Ryan O’Dea; sister Annette M. Johnson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charles Edward Kendall, Jr.; parents Chesley Franklin and Ruby Eastridge McPhatter; brother Chesley Franklin McPhatter, Jr.; step-grandson Samuel C. Siltz; great-grandson Axton Farmer; brothers-in-law Andrew L. Johnson; and B. Stuart Kendall; and sister-in-law Nancy G. McPhatter.

The family offers special thanks to the staff at Commonwealth Senior Living of Fredericksburg, and James River Home Health and Hospice for their loving care of Barbara.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home chapel. Entombment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or St. Matthias United Methodist Church (426 Deacon Rd., Fredericksburg, VA 22405).
