Charles Leslie "Charlie" Graves, 82, formerly of Spotsylvania County, passed away peacefully in his home at Fairview Beach surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. Charlie graduated from Spotsylvania High School in 1952, playing on the first Spotsylvania Knights football team and lettering in football, basketball and baseball. He retired after a combined 35 years of service in both the U. S. Army, where he was deployed to Korea, and the Virginia Army National Guard. Charlie never knew a stranger and was involved in many volunteer organizations. He helped establish Midget League football in Spotsylvania with Buddy Embrey and Sonny Ludlam; Charlie and Mr. Embrey were also the county's first recreation directors, mentoring the youth of Spotsylvania County for many years. They were both instrumental in securing the land that is now Loriella Park as well as developing Marshall Park. Charlie loved his active membership in the Chancellor Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chief at one time. He was also a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry. Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Joanne Ludlam Graves; his daughter, Janice Page Graves of Spotsylvania; son, Charles L. "Chuck" Graves, Jr. and his wife, Tracy, of Mechanicsville; his beloved grandchildren, Daniel Ludlam Graves and Haley Jewell Graves as well as his granddog, Ollie. He is also survived by his brother, Llewellyn L. Graves and his wife, Yvonne, of California; his brother-in-law, Randolph P. "Sonny" Ludlam of Fredericksburg; numerous nieces and nephews, and a lifelong family friend, Mary Monroe. Charlie is predeceased by his parents, Charlie Eustace Graves and Virginia Swift Graves, and his sister, Charlotte G. May. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.Services will be private.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either of the following charitable organizations: Micah Ministries 1013 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401 or the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, 3631 Lee Hill Drive, Fredericksburg, Va. 22408.
