Donald "Butch" H. Payne, Jr.

May 6, 1960 ~ December 14, 2023 (age 63) 63 Years Old

Tribute

Donald “Butch” H. Payne, Jr., 63, of Stafford passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Mary Washington Hospital.

In his early years, Butch worked for his dad in the pavement marking industry. After many years, he made a career change and became a truck driver; a job he loved. Desiring more time at home, Butch returned to the pavement marking industry working alongside family until 2022; at which point he began his employment with Mullen’s Markings, where he would remain a dedicated employee until his untimely passing.

In his spare time, Butch loved talking to and spending time with family. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR, Law & Order, or a good old western show. There is no denying Butch was stubborn and tough, but he also had a good, caring heart; he was always willing to listen, give the shirt off his back or the last dollar in his pocket if it was needed. To say he will be missed is an understatement.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn “Jean” Payne; children Crystal Gouldman (Ben), David Payne, Crissy Thayer, and David Crabtree; grandchildren Haley, Tinley, Grayson, Ashleigh, David, Anastasia, Corbin, Stacey (Cody), Ronnie (Diamond), Zach (Tori), Cheyenne, Cassidy, Skye, and David; great-grandchildren Riley, Lani, Eli, and Mason; and siblings Steve Payne (Michelle), Denise Stanley (Butch), Tim Jenish (Bonnie), Michelle Bridges, and Brittani Noel. Butch is also survived by his stepfather, Curtis Noel; stepmother Frances Payne; two aunts; five cousins; and many nieces and nephews, with three holding a special place in his heart, Stephanie, Clayton and Tarah.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Payne, Sr.; mother Jackie Noel; uncle Tom Daniel; and a brother, Chris Jenish.

A service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home chapel. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or American Cancer Society.
