Dorothy Mae Cropp

Dorothy Mae Cropp, 92, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at her home.

Dorothy, also known as “Doris” to her siblings and “Dot” to her extended family, was born on September 26, 1930, the sixth of eight children to the late Hattie and Daniel McCarthy. She was raised in Spotsylvania and as a young woman worked at the G&H Pants Factory in downtown Fredericksburg. Dorothy enjoyed going to the movies, dances, and the local race track.

She met her husband at the age of 24 and together they raised a family of four, owned and operated a local HVAC business, and enjoyed Saturday night racing and Sunday drives in the country. After her husband’s passing in 2000, Dorothy continued her love for racing and you could find her at Old Dominion Speedway on Saturday nights cheering for her son from the stands. Her favorite NASCAR driver was Jeff Gordon and she displayed his cars and memorabilia proudly in her home that was always immaculately clean.

She is survived by her children, Bonnie Cropp-Kohlligian, Russell T. Cropp (Mary), Mark D. Cropp (Micki), and Tracy Cropp Gallimore (Mark); grandchildren Dorothy, Dennis, Lindsay, Russell, Casey, Zachary, Kevin, Charlie, and James; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; beloved little dog, Jasper; and last but definitely not least, her caregiver and friend, Miranda Morris.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Russell D. Cropp; seven siblings, Willie, Robert, Ernest, James, Lily, Ethel, and Mary.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24 at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
