Dr. Andrew Lewis (Jr.) Moore

October 12, 1953 ~ August 5, 2019 (age 65)

Dr. Andrew Lewis Moore, Jr., DDS, “Andy”, 65, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, died of an unexpected heart attack Monday, August 5, 2019 at his home.

Andy was born in Fredericksburg on October 12, 1953 to Andrew Lewis Moore Sr. and Gladys Fraughnaugh Moore. He graduated from James Monroe High School in 1972, and Hampden-Sydney College in 1976 (B.A. Latin) and 1977 (B.S. Chemistry). He completed dental school at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University in 1982.

Andy was a self-employed dentist in Stafford County for nearly 36 years. He was passionate about missions, both locally and globally. Andy wanted to make sure that even the most vulnerable patients had access to dental care. As a dentist and man of faith, he worked closely with LUCHA Ministries, a faith-based non-profit committed to meeting the needs of the Latino immigrant community. Andy treated many LUCHA clients, who have shared that he always treated them with dignity and respect, regardless of their circumstances. In the late 1980’s, Andy helped run the free dental clinic on weekends through the Bland Ministry Center, in Bland, VA. He served the deaf community in Fredericksburg beginning in his teens, serving as an ASL interpreter at Fredericksburg Baptist Church, then Chancellor Baptist Church, and embraced serving the deaf community in his dental practice.

Andy’s posture of respect created a culture of warmth and care among staff at his practice, and his posture of faith led him on medical mission trips around the world. Most notably, Andy served in dental missions to Grenada for the summer of 1981, Chile in 1986, and spent one week in Panama during each of the last eight years.

Andy loved horseback riding, a pastime he shared with his daughter Sara Kate at Hazelwild Farm Foundation for 28 years. He was an avid collector of collections. Andy loved history and travel, a love he shared with his three girls and this love was the inspiration for many family vacations to Prague, Germany, the British Isles, and more. An optimistic, loving, and deeply caring man, he always had a positive outlook on life.

Andy was married to Janet Gregory on February 25, 1984. In June, they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their first date! He supported Janet’s ministries, her accompanist positions, and Music Ministries at Chancellor Baptist Church, Bowling Green Baptist Church, and Caroline Community Choir.

He is survived by wife Janet; daughters Sara Kate and Anna; mother-in-law Sara Gregory; sister-in-law Susan Hilldrup (Jimmy); nephews Jamie Hilldrup (Linda) and Gregory Hilldrup; and niece Marianna Alzoukani (Ahmad). He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law Howard Gregory; dear Aunt Kate Fraughnaugh; and many other aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 9, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 10 at Fredericksburg Baptist Church. A reception will follow at the church. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church in Sparta, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to LUCHA Ministries (PO Box 8239, Fredericksburg, VA 22404), Panama Missions Fund (Fundacion Cristiana Medico y Social (FCMS)) via Second Baptist Church (9614 River Road, Richmond, VA 23229), or local church missions ministries.
