Edith Cerena Cropp Withers, 100, of Fredericksburg passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2022. She was born on January 30, 1922 to the late James T. and Queen Ellington Cropp at their farm home in Stafford, Virginia.
The family left their farm home towards the end of the Great Depression and moved to Fredericksburg. There she met the love of her life, William C. Withers. They were married on October 29, 1941. Together they had four children, William C. Withers, Jr. (Alma), Mary K. Withers Savage (Jimmy), James L. Withers (Marsha), and A. Wayne Withers (Carolyn).
Edith was a homemaker, though working for a short time at the Fredericksburg Shoe Factory during World War II and later in the old X-Ray department at Mary Washington Hospital. She was a Christian woman, reading the Bible daily while her sight allowed. She was a longtime member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church. She greatly enjoyed time with family and friends.
Mrs. Withers is survived by her children and their spouses; grandchildren Andy Withers (Lisa) and Will Withers (Ashley); great-grandchildren Drew, McKenna, London, and Caden; her sister, Elva Mussleman; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings Nora Cropp Beach, Lennie T. Cropp, Aubrey G. Cropp, J. Carlton Cropp, Archie W. Cropp. W. Calvin Cropp, Flossie Cropp Bradshae, and Wade Cropp.
The family would like to express thanks to Karen and her staff at Commonwealth Senior Living at Fredericksburg for their loving care given while mother was living there and Mary Washington Hospital Hospice for their valuable assistance.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at Fredericksburg Baptist Church. Interment will be private.
