Evonne Evelyn Herrell, 81, of Stafford, died on Monday, September 9, 2019 at her home surrounded by family and friends.
She was born Evonne Evelyn Hendrickson on March 24, 1938 in Britton, SD to Arthur Reno Hendrickson and Freda Cary Meyer Hendrickson. Evonne was the oldest of six children, three boys and three girls.
Evonne married Kenneth Wayne Herrell on April 5, 1956 in Rapid City, SD while he was in the Air Force, stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base. To that union there were seven children, two died at childbirth. They left Rapid City in 1957 and were transferred to Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, NM. Two of Evonne’s brothers and one sister lived with her and Ken for several years in New Mexico. She cared and never complained about having the extra mouths to feed or take care of. They were transferred to Newfoundland, Canada in 1964. From there, they were transferred to Travis Air Force Base in Merced, CA; Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, NH; and Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY. Upon retirement from the Air Force, he and Evonne relocated to Dale City, VA.
Evonne and Ken both loved to vacation and owned several timeshares. They spent many years traveling with their family and friends to Nassau, Bahamas and Massanutten, VA. Evonne was a fabulous baker and baked hundreds of cookies to make Christmas trays for her family and friends each years. She also spent hours baking several items for bake sales through the years. Evonne put her heart and soul into everything she did and overextended herself most of the time. She was proficient in bowling and joined several leagues, and kept professional scores. Evonne was an excellent seamstress and sewed clothing including coats to perfection. When she became limited in her activities, she colored every page of several adult coloring books. All of them were immaculate.
Prior to her death and at her death, Evonne lived with her daughter, Cheryl and Scott Hayman and family in Stafford, VA.
Evonne is survived by her children, Cheryl Hayman and Scott, of Stafford, VA, David Herrell and Miriam, of Ashburn, VA, and Keith Harrell and Heather, of Swoope, VA; nine grandchildren Wendy Ginther, of TX, Crystal Breen, of VA, Steven Paine, of VA, Craig Davis, of VA, Ryan Davis, of VA, Aaron Davis, of NY, Katrina Herrell, of VA, Scott Haymon, Jr. of CA, and Allie Hayman, of VA; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters Sharon Edwards and Jerry, of Rapid City, SD and Judy Cochran and Lyle, of Rapid City, SD; one brother Dwight Hendrickson and Sandra, of Bossier City, LA. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; four children, Freda Mae Infant of Roswell, NM, Kenneth W. Infant, of Rapid City, SD, Wesley of Manassas, VA, and Vicky Lynn, of Shalimar FL; brother Ronnie Hendrickson, of Beaver Creek, OR; and brother Daryl Hendrickson, of Rapid City, SD.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel. Interment will be private.
