Frances "Fran" Sullivan

October 1, 1931 ~ January 25, 2024 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Mary Frances Jenkins Sullivan, 92, of Stafford County gently left the bonds of earthly life to be with our Lord on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at Mary Washington Hospital.

When she was a child, Fran was blessed with beautiful snow white hair leading her father to nickname her “Cotton”, a name which she carried throughout her life. Fran was a graduate of James Monroe High School, where she was a standout in women’s sports, particularly as a basketball player. In 1952, she wed her high school sweetheart, Donald “Pete” Sullivan, and spent the next four years as the wife of an Air Force serviceman. Once returning from military service, they began raising a family. Once both children were in school, Fran began working in the administrative office of Hotchkiss Oil, now known as Quarles Petroleum, where she stayed until her retirement in October of 1993. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 55 Auxiliary.  After her retirement, she remained constantly busy between her church, her mother, and her grandchildren. Fran and Pete also loved to travel.

Fran was a woman of incredible Christian faith who started and ended each day by reading her daily bible devotions and lived by three simple words – faith, family, friends. She had a unique ability to quote scripture for any situation and had such strong compassion for those less fortunate leading her to be a faithful giver. Originally raised in the Baptist Church, she transferred to the United Methodist Church after getting married, spending the remainder of her life in just two congregations, Fredericksburg United Methodist and New Hope United Methodist. She proudly served as a leader of the Crafters, was a member of the choir, served on numerous church committees, and was a member of the United Methodist Women’s group.

Fran and Pete had a passion for the land and loved gardening. They spent many years planting, growing, picking, and canning. Many a night they would come home from work, eat dinner, and head out to the garden to tend and reap, then inside to shell peas, snap beans, or can until late. Their home table was always “Farm Fresh” before it became a modern buzzword.

Fran loved her family with all her heart. Those who are left not to mourn but to celebrate the joy that she brought to life are her children, Donna Marino (Tony) and Wayne Sullivan (Stephanie); grandchildren Jeffrey Newton, Jr. (Stephanie), Timothy Sullivan (Catherine), Lauren Sullivan (Skylar), and LeeAnn Sullivan (Emily); and great-grandchildren Gracelynn Newton, Ainsley Newton, Mackenzie Sullivan, Wyatt Sullivan, and Carson Turnbull.

Fran was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 67 years, Pete; parents Jerome and Louise Jenkins; brothers Robert (Bobby) Jenkins and Glen Jenkins; and sister Helen Jenkins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 3 at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Jeffrey Newton, Jr., Timothy Sullivan, LeeAnn Sullivan, Tony Marino, Skylar Turnbull, and Jonathan Whitby.
