American Veteran 04

Frederick Raymond “Ray” Little

July 19, 1931 ~ October 11, 2023 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Frederick Raymond “Ray” Little went to be with the Lord, and joined his loving wife of 67 years, Marlene, on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Katie Little; his siblings, Mazelle Tillman, J.C.  “Bud” Little, Edna Dent, and Doris Pittman; and his son-in-law, Emory Donelson, III.

Ray was born in Meehan, Mississippi on July 19, 1931, and grew up in nearby Meridian, graduating from Meridian High School in 1949. After graduation, he served his country in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, in Aberdeen, Maryland. Ray was a very proud veteran.

He met the love of his life, Marlene Vogel, on a blind date in 1952, and they were married on January 10, 1953 in Baltimore. Ray and Marlene had four children, Carol Little Keith, Mike Little (Mary), David Little (Dawn), and Becky Vlahcevic (Andrej); 10 grandchildren, Katie, Sara, Ashley, Patrick, E.J., Emily, Abby, Matthew, Brennan and Kara; and 8 great-grandchildren J.P., Claire, Rivers, Rudy, Aubrey, Connor, Alyssa and Kaleb. Family holidays and events were always large and loud! During these events, Ray would often comment to Marlene, ‘We created all of this!!”

Ray worked for the B.F. Goodrich Company, in both Baltimore and Richmond, Virginia. In 1959, Ray opened “Little Tire Company” on Princess Anne Street in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  Ray was very proud of his business, and with his sons, Mike and David, and grandchildren, Sara and Patrick, grew it to three locations over the past 64 years. He employed many, and helped keep many Fredericksburg residents traveling safely in their trucks and automobiles over these 64 years.

Ray was very active in the Fredericksburg community as a member of the Fredericksburg Jaycees until reaching ‘Exhausted Rooster’ status at 35 years old. He was a member of the Fredericksburg Rotary Club beginning in 1969, serving as President in 1978 - 79. Ray was an active Rotarian until very recently. Ray was a good Christian, also a long time member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church, often sitting in the back row, so he could leave just a little early to pick up Marlene from St. Mary’s Church after Sunday mass. No matter where Ray and Marlene were traveling, Ray always made sure he located a Catholic Church so he could get Marlene to Mass on Sundays.

Ray loved all sports, but especially ACC basketball, Major League Baseball and golf. He was known to sit on his porch back in the day with a ‘NattyBoh’ listening to his beloved Baltimore Orioles on the radio, who disappointed him greatly this week by losing in the American League playoffs. Ray loved playing golf with his friends at Fredericksburg Country Club as frequently as possible. He made 8 holes-in-one in his lifetime. Marlene used to say he should have had many more as much as he played! In November, at 91 years of age, Ray shot an 83 and last played golf in June of this year.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023 at Covenant Funeral Service, 10830 Patriot Highway, Fredericksburg 22408. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Fredericksburg Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fredericksburg Baptist Church, 1019 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, VA 22401.

Ray made many friends in his 92 years. He loved nothing more than to just chat with people.  After one of his children made a mistake, or got in trouble, he would always ask them “did ya learn anything?” It was always very thought provoking! And oh, yes, Dad/Ray, we did! We learned so much from you!!! Ray will be missed by many, and never forgotten!
