Gardner Leroy Delano

October 15, 1938 ~ December 31, 2023 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Tribute

Gardner “Leroy” Delano, age 85, of Spotsylvania, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 31, 2023 at home. He was born on October 15, 1938, in Stafford.

Leroy worked diligently as a house painter throughout his life, picking up the trade from his father. As a painter, he never had to advertise due to his good work and well-known reputation. He enjoyed going to Salem Fields Community Church with his family, and, in the end, when he wasn’t physically up to attending, he would watch online. Leroy frequently traveled to California and Wisconsin to visit his family. As a proud grandfather (“Pop Pop”), he celebrated special events with his kids and grandkids.

Many knew Leroy as a very outgoing person who would strike up a conversation with anyone, often adding bits of humor. A student-athlete at Spotsylvania High School (Class of ’56), he never missed a day of school. Leroy followed the Washington Nationals, Washington Commanders, University of Virginia Cavaliers, and NASCAR. His favorite driver was Tony Stewart. He was a proud member of the Courtland High School ‘chain gang’ for 58 years, spending Friday nights walking the sidelines for home football games.

He is survived by his daughters, Sherri Purnell (Tom) of Madison, WI and Karen Delano-Johnson (Rikki) of Locust Grove; son, Gardner W. Delano of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Sylvia Todt of Fredericksburg; granddaughters, Mykala Johnson and Elizabeth Purnell; grandsons, H.D. Johnson, Thomas Purnell, and Jonathan Purnell; nieces, Susan Smith and Shannon Heffern; great-niece; Lacey Wilson; and numerous other cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gardner K. and Ethel Delano; wife, Betty Jean Delano; son, Robert L. Delano; and brother, Robert W. Delano.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The pallbearers are H.D. Johnson, Hunter Garnett, Rick Pennock, Tom Heffern, Ronnie Lowman, and Charlie Danielson; and the honorary pallbearers are Tucker Garnett and Eddie Brann.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gigi's Playhouse (4101 Monona Drive, Madison, WI 53716) or Salem Fields Community Church (Attn: Night to Shine, 11120 Gordon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407).

The family would like to thank all of Leroy’s friends and much-loved sister, Sylvia (who spent extended time caring for him); and especially those who shared of themselves up to the end: Hunter Garnett, Tina Everly, and Beth Bradshaw.
