Gary Patrick Rooney, 74, of Citrus Springs, Florida and Spotsylvania, Virginia, passed away on February 20, 2021 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.
Patrick was born in Hanover, New Hampshire to Howard and Connie Rooney on December 6, 1946. He attended Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland. He married Linda M. Meyer on November 17, 1973 in Rockville, Maryland.
Patrick graduated from Mary Washington College with a business degree and worked in the energy industry for Potomac Electric and Dominion Resources. He retired from the Department of Energy in 2009. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the Navy on the USS Kittyhawk and as an aircraft electrician on NAVAIR flights. Patrick was awarded the National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Metal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Patrick was a Christian that loved his church and was a member of the choir for years. He loved cooking, especially using his Green Egg smoker and was well known for his smoked salmon. He was a member of the Eagles and a Mason and enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially with his friends at the “Dog House” on the Virginia eastern shore. He played golf as often as possible, in Virginia in the summer and Florida in the winter. Patrick loved to travel, he and Linda spent many wonderful years visiting different countries with friends. He also loved his family dearly and was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Linda M. Rooney, his three sisters; Cindy Rooney, Terry Rooney and Mary Jo Spruill (Tommy) his two brothers Michael (Nancy) and Brian Rooney (Cindy), his son David and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard J. Rooney; and his mother, Mary Constance Rooney.
Funeral services and burial will be announced at a later date.
