George Earle Colwell

December 30, 1945 ~ March 31, 2023 (age 77) 77 Years Old

Tribute

George Earle Colwell, 77, of Fredericksburg, Virginia went to be with our Lord and Savior on Friday, March 31, 2023.

George was born on December 30, 1945 in Providence, Rhode Island to George F. and Barbara Lovell Colwell (née Leiss). In 1950, his family moved to State College, Pennsylvania, where George attended area schools, graduating in 1963 from State College High School. Intrigued by the then infant electronic computer industry, George attended Thompson Institute in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in Computer Science. His technical expertise and his extraordinary people skills naturally lent themselves to a career in the growing field of computer sales. George evaluated the information technology requirements of central and south Pennsylvania businesses, school districts, and universities, and then tailored state-of-the-art solutions to fulfill their needs. During the 1970s, as a way to relax, he developed into a competitive amateur dog sled trainer and racer, winning multiple regional races. In 2014, George retired to Fredericksburg, where he was an active and faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. George enjoyed keeping up with friends and political events, and he continued to be a loyal and enthusiastic Penn State football fan until the end of his life.

George is survived by his former wife, Barbara Sheaffer (née Grine); daughters Tami Lee Mondy (Terance) and Carole “Keri” Karlene Brown (Robert); grandchildren Elisa Pierce (Ellen), Maximilian (Alexis), Savannah Mondy, and Skyler and Mitchell Brown; brothers John Leiss and Barry Colwell; and sisters Carole Pron and Janet Spencer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather William Leiss; and brother David Leiss.

Family and friends are warmly invited to pay their respects at his memorial service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A reception will follow at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Private interment will take place this coming autumn.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, in memory of George Colwell.
