Tribute

George H. Johnson, Jr., 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at his home with his loving family beside him. He left knowing he was loved by his family and his many friends. He is now reunited in Heaven with his loved ones and watching over us here on Earth.

George was a proud member of St. Mary Catholic Church where he held the highest honor of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus and Honor America Corps, where he marched proudly. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 320 in Spotsylvania, VA. He loved volunteering at St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store every Saturday and made so many new friends and saw many old friends.

George served proudly in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant for eight years and worked at the Pentagon and State Department before retiring. He spent many years as a HAM operator with the MARS network and a member of the Rappahannock Valley Amateur Radio Club.

George was a great friend to all, always had a smile, and was willing to help anyone who needed it. He always lit up a room with his smile, blue eyes, and kindness. He loved talking about his adventures growing up, life on the family farm in upstate New York, and his family. George loved to travel, being with his family, and sharing precious memories. He will be greatly missed and loved eternally.

He is survived by his children, Joyce Baker (Johnny) and George H. Johnson III (Gloria); grandchildren Joshua Johnson, Joey Johnson (Jess), and Jeremy Baker; sister Joann Ausland; nieces Jodi Ausland and Laura Johnson; sister-in-law Lorraine Johnson; nephew Edward Johnson (Maria); and beloved cat, Chester. He also leaves behind a very special friend, Amy; and special lunch buddy, Joe.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine M. Johnson; son Joseph M. Johnson; grandson Scott Hummer; brother Edward Johnson; and brother-in-law Jim Ausland.
