Tribute

Golden Douglas Turman, 85, of Meadows of Dan, VA passed away Monday, November 16, 2020 in Fredericksburg VA. He was known to his family and friends as Doug.

Doug was born in Meadows of Dan, VA, on September 9, 1935. After finishing high school, he joined the army and was stationed in Germany. He spent most of his career working for IBM in Richmond VA and Charlotte NC. After retiring, Doug and Becky moved back to the mountains, where they built their own house. Doug was very active in community organizations, including being on the board of the Laurel Fork Health Center, the Ruritan Club, the Carroll County Genealogy Club, and was caretaker for the Bell Spur Cemetery.  His hobbies included hunting, genealogy, computers, farming (he could make dead sticks grow!). Doug was always busy with something and could never be idle for very long, sometimes to his wife Becky’s chagrin.  He loved taking his daily walks along the streets around his home, and loved the mountains and being near friends and family.

He is survived by his daughter Dianna Turman Flake and husband David of Summerville, SC, son Neil Douglas Turman and wife Therese of Waxhaw, NC, and son Clifton Golden Turman and wife Sandy Harris-Turman of Fredericksburg, VA. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: William Flake and wife Lynn, Hannah Turman, Zachary Turman, Benjamin Turman and Rachel Turman. He has two great-grandsons Jeremiah Flake and Isaac Flake and a great-granddaughter on the way. Doug is also survived by his brothers Raiford Turman and wife Evelyn, Julian Turman and wife Pearl, sister Gonzalee Turman Proffitt and husband Jim, and sister-in-law Judy Turman-Smith. Doug was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Rebecca Clifton Turman, parents Golden Turman and Lillian Epperson Turman, sister Gwendola Turman Tilley and husband Garland Tilley, brother Roy Turman, sister-in-law Janelda Turman.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no funeral at this time. A Celebration of Doug’s Life is being planned for the late spring or summer of 2021. His remains will be interred at Bell Spur Cemetery, next to his wife. Donations in Doug’s memory may be sent to the Bell Spur Cemetery Fund, c/o Bonita Turman, 658 Clint Lane, Meadows of Dan VA 24120.
