James Herbert "Herby" Cook

James Herbert “Herby” Cook, 63, of Fredericksburg, VA died July 4, 2020 from complications of pneumonia.

He was born April 15, 1957 in Alexandria, VA.  He was one of six children and the youngest son of the late William Douglas and Catherine Elizabeth Cook.

Herby graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1975.  He worked in the Asphalt business taking after his father and older brothers. 

He is survived by his sister; Carolyn Mann of Charlotte, NC; his brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Monica Cook of Fredericksburg, VA; his sister and brother-in-law, Lea and Mike Frye of Woodridge, VA; and sister-in-law Barbara Cook of Nokesville, VA.

He loved being “Uncle” Herby to eight nieces and nephews, and 12 great-nieces and nephews.  He always had a smile on his face when babysitting or coaching little league baseball.  He felt like a big kid just being around them all!  Herby was a storyteller and loved to tell the childhood adventurers he shared with his brothers.

Herby was predeceased by brothers Douglas Gary and Jeffery Stuart Cook; and his dear Aunt and Uncle, Virginia and James Garfield Duvall.

Herby had a soft spot for cats and always had at least one he had adopted roaming round the house.

Herby shared his family’s die hard love for Washington football and his favorite times were when the family all came together to watch a game on Sunday.

There will be a private graveside service on Friday, July 17 at Pohick Church for the family.
