Tribute

James Daniel Qualls (aka Coach, “Doctor” Jimmy, JQ), 77, of Stafford County passed away on April 13, 2022.  He was a loving husband to his wife Sharon for 52 years and the father of his son, Bradley, who was his pride and joy, and daughter-in-law Amy.  He was proud to be called Paw-Paw by his grandchildren Jordan (his princess) and his “little buddies” Ryan and Brady.  He was a wonderful brother to his siblings Dewel Mae Burton, Sally Tysor, and Keith Qualls.  He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel Matthew and Fannie Mae Qualls and younger brother Tommy Neil.

Jimmy grew up in Burlington, NC where he attended Walter M. Williams High School and relocated to Woodbridge, VA where he graduated from Gar-Field High School in 1964.  Jimmy attended Concord College where he was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity.  He earned his Master's Degree from Virginia Tech University.  He began his teaching and coaching career at Rippon Middle School where he coached many sports.  Jimmy then moved to Potomac High School where he coached basketball, football, and softball before becoming the Athletic Director.  JQ opened C.D. Hylton High School as the athletic director beginning in 1991 until his retirement in 2007.  Under his supervision Hylton High School won 12 State titles.  He was completely dedicated to high school sports, spending countless hours making sure he hired the best coaches, had the best equipment, and impeccable fields.  He was inducted into both the Potomac and Hylton High School Hall of Fame.  After retiring from Hylton, he coached football at Colonial Forge High School.  Coach enjoyed mentoring students, coaches, and building positive relationships.  His leadership style impacted the lives of many and he emphasized “being a good person.”  Coach enjoyed his time with his Carlos O’Kelly’s crew watching games and cheering on his beloved Tarheels.

He cherished spending time with his family which included him coaching and cheering for his “#1 son” Brad and attending his grandchildren’s many activities.  He loved Atlantic City trips, listening to Elvis, and cruising Lake Anna on his pontoon with family and friends.  Jim was a great husband, dad, Paw-Paw, coach, and friend.  He is a true legend!

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm-8:00pm on Friday, April 22nd at Covenant Funeral Home in Stafford.  A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 23rd at the Colonial Forge High School Auditorium.

In lieu of flowers, Jim’s family would like for everyone to participate in Random Acts of Kindness to others in his honor.  Although not necessary, if you would like to share your acts of kindness please use the hashtag #Kindness4Qualls to share stories or pictures to keep his legacy alive.  Caring, Kindness, and Living Life to the Fullest was important to him.
