James Lee Strother, 75, of Fredericksburg passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021 due to complications that came after a surgery. He was born on June 9, 1945 to the late Eugene C. Strother, Sr. and Addie B. Strother.
God sent James a special mentor as a young boy, Jim Monteith, a farmer and businessman who taught him a lot and helped him become the man that he was. James was a hard-working entrepreneur and owned several businesses over the years. He and his partner, Curtis Nicholson, ran Nicholson and Strother Moving early in his career. James also managed his own garage and towing company for many years, Strother’s Towing, and he often bought and sold real estate throughout his life. For the past 19 years, James partnered with Kelli Beutel on operating the Courthouse Café in Spotsylvania. Many of the Café’s customers over the years not only came to enjoy a meal, but to visit with James. He was also on the Spotsylvania County Planning Commission, having served for 12 years. James was earnest about his position there, paying special attention to and thoroughly researching every project and task at-hand to ensure the most serviceable outcome. A man of his word, James’ hard work, determination, compassion for others, and integrity were evident to all. More than anything, he loved the Lord and his family, and wanted nothing less than the best for them. He was always there for those in need. James also enjoyed visiting his farm—Oak Springs Farm-- in Caroline County, and spending time there with his family and friends. He enjoyed being around people, and he held a special place in his heart for his grand-dog, Nellie. Some days, he drove all the way down to the farm to make sure Nellie got her treats from him.
Survivors include his partner in life, Kelli G. Beutel; daughter Barbara Grogan (Kenny); son James L. Strother, Jr. (Lisa); grandchildren Kenneth A. Grogan II (Mary), Matthew L. Grogan (Meagan), James Hunter Strother (Emily), and Heather Lee Strother; brother Eugene C. “Sonny” Strother, Jr. (Frieda); grandson Bo; sister Linda S. Patrick (Joe); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene C. Strother, Sr. and Addie B. Strother; brothers William L. Strother and Larry W. Strother, Sr.; and his sister, Betty A. Frame.
