Tribute

Janice Lorraine “Jan” Shilling, 78, of Caroline county passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Mary Washington Hospital.

Jan was born and grew up in Alexandria. She was a lifelong fan of the Price is Right and Let’s Make a Deal. Some of her favorite things included Oreo’s, coffee, bologna sandwiches, and Max the family cat. She loved her family and expressed great pride in her children and grandchildren. She was an immaculate housekeeper and was meticulous about her personal appearance. Jan was known for her delicious potato salad, coleslaw, pulled pork BBQ, and various amazing cakes.

Working her early life as a professional packer and convenience store manager, she later used her love and talent for cooking to begin her own restaurant business, beginning first at General Products of Fredericksburg, VA where she owned and managed the cafeteria service for many years. Later, alongside her son Monk, she began several local restaurant establishments in and around the Fredericksburg area, later retiring due to health concerns.

Janice was loved and will be missed by her family and friends. We will miss her sense of humor, her laugh, and her endless concerns for her family, always reminding everyone to be sure they had plenty of gas in their car.

A special thank you to those who cared for her and saw to her needs during her many health struggles. Thank you, Debra, Monk, and Maddox Adcock, and Tiffany Surles for many years of care, love, concern, and dedication to Jan.

Survivors include her children, Alton Adcock (Lisa), Connie Chidester (Steve), and Monk Adcock (Debra); grandchildren Brittney, Tiffany, Amber, Candus, Aarika, Stephanie Maddox, Matthew, Kara, Brenna, and Danielle; great-grandchildren Alysa, Charlotte, Tessa, Jase, Landon, Leo, Garrett, Bentley, James, Teddy, Tegan, Braden, and Bryce; siblings A. Wayne Dodson (Sandy) and Kenneth Dodson; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Alton L. Dodson; mother L.
