Jerry Dean Surles

December 24, 1947 ~ November 20, 2021 (age 73) 73 Years Old

Tribute

On Saturday, November 20, 2021, the Surles Family lost the beloved leader of the pack, Jerry Dean Surles at 73 years old.

Jerry’s many titles included Pops, Papa, Old Man, but most importantly Dad. Jerry battled several illnesses throughout the past few years, and even though he was vaccinated against Covid, his body was unable to fight off the virus.

Jerry was a lifelong resident of Stafford. Jerry served in the Army and became a jack of many trades throughout his life, including construction, heavy equipment operator and mechanic, racecar mechanic, and in retirement became the #1 Fan at his grandchildren’s sporting events. He always had advice for everyone.

You may have encountered Jerry anywhere from his oldest son's shop Ferry Farm Repair, his youngest son's store Catfish Kelly’s, or any variety of restaurants, as the man loved to eat out. If you were one of his nurses, physicians, or front desk staff at any of his doctors’ offices you know him and his grumpy but goodhearted nature well. He made friends everywhere, too many to list.

Jerry’s elaborate storytelling was captivating, as you never knew what random “facts” he was going to throw your way. Those of you who felt the need to sit a spell and discuss life with him, were some of the lucky ones.

If you ever spoke with Jerry, there is no doubt you heard stories of his children and grandchildren. Those left here to miss him the most include his children: Philip Surles (Jen), Donna Rhody, Michelle Wentz (Donny), Chris Surles (Kelly); grandchildren, who were lovingly referred to as knotheads, knuckleheads, and trouble include: Sabrina, Brandon, James, Kayla, Michael, Christopher, Kylee, Isabella, Hailey, PJ; honorary granddaughter Amanda; brother Wayne Surles (Sue); sister Judy Barnes; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as the too many adopted family members to count.

With big love, comes big hurt. Jerry did not want to go, but his body was so tired and he needed to be at rest. Jerry is now with his wife, Judy, reunited after so many years apart. We are sure his mom, dad, and brother Ted were all waiting to welcome him. Just know he loves you all.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday November 29 at Covenant Funeral Service in Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 30 at Covenant Funeral Service with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity or pay it forward at your favorite restaurant in memory of Jerry.
