Joachim Heinrich Karl Schmidt, 83, passed away on September 3, 2021, in his home at White Springs Senior Living in Warrenton, VA.
He was born 1938, in Breslau, Germany, and grew up in the family home in Berlin. He had fond memories of his youth there and was proud to call himself “Ein Berliner”. Joachim and his wife Helga courageously immigrated to the US from Germany in 1960, after surviving a harsh WWII childhood. He worked hard to learn a new language, establish himself, and support a young family in their new country. After serving in the US Army, Joachim ambitiously culminated his 25-year federal career as a Deputy Director in the Veterans Administration Benefits Delivery Service.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his family, animals, music, dancing, and nature.
Joachim was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Hilda Schmidt, and sisters Gisela and Margot. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Helga Julianne Schmidt; their two sons and their wives, Roger and Louise Schmidt of Catlett, and Clifford and Andrea Schmidt of Orlean, Virginia, and two grandchildren Ryan and Eric.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery.
