Julia O’Connor

August 26, 1929 ~ December 18, 2023 (age 94) 94 Years Old

Tribute

On Monday, December 18, 2023, Julia O’Connor, 94, passed away suddenly after a brief illness. She lived her life to the fullest and was active and very independent to her last days.

Julia was born on August 26, 1929 in San Francisco, CA to Swiss immigrants, Sebastian and Marion Padrun.  While attending Commerce High School during the WWII years, she and a cousin spent a couple summers harvesting fruit in the California orchards because the usual laborers were away serving their country. After graduation, Julia began a long career in banking. Julia met her husband, Joe, at a Swiss Dance and they shared a lifelong love of dancing. They married in October 1954 and were blessed with five children.

In 1969, Julia and Joe moved to Fredericksburg, VA when Joe was transferred to Dahlgren Naval Base as a civilian employee of the Navy Department. She was heartsick to leave her parents and sister in her favorite city, but moved their five young children across the country to Fredericksburg and built a wonderful life there. Julia eventually returned to banking at Farmers and Merchants Bank and when she retired, she volunteered for many years at both the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank and St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church.

Julia was a loving and welcoming mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. While she loved her children, she especially loved hearing from and seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home was decorated with gifts of drawings and pictures from the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Julia had many hobbies including gardening, sewing, needlepoint, jigsaw puzzles, reading, playing Word Chums, drawing, and doing Jazzercise (which she continued into her early 90s until Covid interrupted life). She loved to cook for her family and nothing gave her more pleasure than to have everyone home for the holidays gathered around the dining room table.

Julia is survived by her children, Joseph O'Connor, Jr. (Debbie) of Charlotte, NC, Annette Sweeney (Robert) of Ramsey, NJ, Thomas O'Connor of Fredericksburg, Elizabeth Jarrell (James III) of Fredericksburg, and Timothy O'Connor (Elizabeth) of Williamsburg, VA; and ten grandchildren, James IV (Stephanie), Moriah (Tyler), Julianne (Jon), Shalan, Tommy, John, Mary, Colin, Charlie, and Will; and three great-grandchildren, Olive, Jack, and Annie. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Joseph D. O’Connor; loving daughter-in-law, Joyce H. O’Connor; and her only sister and best friend, Jane Landucci.

A Mass of celebration will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2023 at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Julia’s name to Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank (3631 Lee Hill Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22408).
