LCDR William Ashley McGown, Jr., USN (Retired)

September 22, 1932 ~ January 27, 2024 (age 91) 91 Years Old


William “Bill” Ashley McGown, Jr., 91, of Spotsylvania County, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Commonwealth Senior Living, Fredericksburg.

Bill was the beloved husband of Wilma “Willie” May McGown, who predeceased him in May 2019 at the age of 84. He is survived by his children, David McGown (Mary Keller), Kathy McGown-Brock (Bill), and Michael McGown; grandchildren David and Stephen Brock; sisters Patricia "Pat" Rockenhauser and Nancy McFeely (Gerry); nieces and nephew Debbie Chused (Paul), Amy Taylor (Clint), Beth Simeon (George), and Jim Rockenhauser (Sandy) and their extended families; and close friends, Alan and Katherine Hager.

Bill was born on September 22, 1932, in Newell, West Virginia, the son of William Ashley McGown and Susie McGown (née Ripley). He attended Purdue University on a Navy ROTC scholarship and was commissioned into the Navy in 1954 upon graduation. He met his wife, Willie, at Purdue and they were married for almost 65 years. Bill had a 21 year career in the US Navy, stationed on a number of ships homebased in Norfolk, VA, Newport, RI, and Charleston, SC, and with shore duty assignments at the Pentagon and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, in Virginia Beach. He retired to a civilian career with Comptek Research, working in the Virginia Beach and Dahlgren offices.

Bill was a long-time member of the Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church (now known as Hope). He was an Elder of the church and served in leadership roles in the Presbytery and was involved in fellowship groups and Bible studies. Bill was the first person to greet newcomers and welcomed them to the church with a handshake and a smile. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed serving as a Starter and Marshal at Lee’s Hill Golf Club as well as helping to organize tournaments for Young Life.

Bill will be honored at a memorial service with family and friends at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 5, 2024 at Hope Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6 in National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico.   

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Young Life Fredericksburg or the Alzheimer's Association.
