Tribute

Lt. Col. Armand Eugene “Mal” Malo, US Army (Ret.) passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021 in Fredericksburg.

He was born in Central Falls, RI on April 20, 1938 and grew up in Pawtucket, RI, where he assisted his father in running the Malo Variety Store. Upon graduation from high school, he attended the University of Rhode Island majoring in business management. While in college, he was a member of the ROTC for all four years of college. He graduated from college in 1959 as a Second Lieutenant. His area of specialty while in the army was supply management/logistics. In 1962, he earned a master’s degree in accounting from Babson College. Mr. Malo served in Vietnam in 1967 for one year with the 25th Infantry Division. Following that tour of duty due to his fluency in French, his next assignment was in Cambodia with the Cambodian army, most of whom were French-speaking. Mal often said his best year in the Army was the one spent in Cambodia.

After retiring from the Army in 1979, he served first as the Assistant Director for 17 years and then as the Director for three years of the Fairfax Purchasing and Supply Management Agency. He received his CPPO certification while there. After his second retirement from Fairfax County in 2002, he and his wife moved from Burke to Fredericksburg. His lifelong passions have been playing and watching golf, and rooting for his beloved Boston Red Sox and Washington Redskins. After moving to the Falls Run community in 2002, he became active in the Falls Run Old Golfers Association (FROGS) and forged some wonderful friendships as a part of that group. Mal also played with the Gauntlet Golf Club’s senior tour.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Linda Dubois Quitmeyer-Malo; children Stephen Christopher Malo, Sharon Malo Weaver (Alan), and Doug Quitmeyer; grandchildren Bryson Malo, Bayley and Brenner Malo (fraternal twins), Cameron Malo, Gavin Malo, Landon Weaver, Carson Weaver, Charlotte and Juliette Quitmeyer (identical twins).

A service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 12 at Covenant Funeral Service Chapel, Stafford. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. before the service. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery.
