Mirabeau Lamar Thomas Hughes

June 8, 1932 ~ December 6, 2018 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Tribute

Mirabeau Lamar Thomas Hughes, Jr., a longtime resident of College Heights, Fredericksburg, VA, and a retired People’s Drug Store/CVS pharmacist for over 40 years in Fredericksburg died on December 6, 2018.

He was known as Beau by his wife Wendy and friends.  Beau was born on June 8, 1932 in Danville, VA, the only child of M. L. T. Hughes, Sr. and Alma Mae (Nall) Hughes.  Both parents preceded him in death.

Beau graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1954, then served two years in the U.S. Army.  Afterwards, he entered the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia, where he graduated in 1959.  He then came to Fredericksburg, VA where he was employed by People’s Drug Store.  In Fredericksburg, Va., he married a local girl, Alice Gouldman.  They had one son, Tom, who while quite young, accompanied his father on many hiking trips through the Shenandoah Mountains.  Beau loved hiking, fishing, duplicate bridge and golfing in those early days.

Beau was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Gouldman Hughes, to whom he was married for 22 years.  They had one child, George William Thomas Hughes, also known as Tom.  Beau is survived by Tom of Fairborn, Ohio; two granddaughters, Allison Paige Hughes, of Riverside, Ohio, and Taylor Lee Hughes, of Farragut, Tennessee; grandson, Thomas Jay Hughes and his wife Natalie; and two great-grandsons, Gabriel William Thomas and Lincoln Jay Hughes, of Huber Heights, Ohio.  Beau was also preceded in death by his second wife, Joan Bridges Hughes, to whom he was married for 18 years.  They had no children.

He later married for the third time in 2007 to Wendy Kay West of Richmond, Va.  They met at Fairview Baptist Church, Fredericksburg, VA, where they became good friends.  They became devoted members of Fairview, where Wendy became a Sunday school teacher and Beau, a member of the Senior Choir.  He loved speaking at the nursing homes.  Beau loved this truth, “God really does love us,” and desires for us to accept his love through his son, Jesus Christ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to your favorite charity or to Fairview Baptist Church’s Building Fund.
