Phil served in the United States Marine Corp and while stationed at Quantico met Barbara who worked in Washington D.C. Phil married Barbara in August of 1964 and they were married for over 58 years. They met on a blind date after being introduced by Ron Legere and Nancy Crummy. Ron and Nancy also married and have been lifelong friends of Phil and Barbara. Phil worked as a route salesman for Herr’s Foods Inc. and after retiring drove a bus for the City of Fredericksburg (FRED).
Phil was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan having been born in Pittsburgh in 1943. Phil loved to fish and enjoyed both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Phil loved gardening, cooking, especially cooking competitions with his daughter Kathy.
Remembrance
Phil was a devout Christian and often told people of his relationship with the Lord. When he was younger, he drove a bus to take people to Sunday school and church. Phil was devoted to his wife and adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Phil told his wife and children he loved them each day and a phone call never ended where “I love you” were not the last words spoken. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren he was known as “Pap-Pap”.
Phil was a jokester and loved to laugh and crack jokes. Holidays were his favorite time. He really loved spending time with his family. During Christmas, he loved shaking the presents and checking the weight of the gift to try and guess what was inside.
Phil worked very hard as a route salesman. The job required long hours and driving in all kinds of weather. Phil loved reading the newspaper and was always up on the sale ads. He knew the best bargains at all the grocery stores and made sure he let his family know.
As far as his grandchildren and great grandchildren, there was nothing he wouldn’t do for them. He let granddaughter Kelly paint his toenails when she was around 4 years old and later in life it was Kelly’s daughter, Reighly, who at the age of three, was putting wigs on Phil. You could see the huge smile on Phil’s face in the pictures we took. It was sheer joy to him. I think Phil liked it more than the kids did.
Phil and Barbara took many vacations over the years with life-long friends Ron and Nancy Legere and John and Susie Friend (no this is not typo).
