Richard “Rich” O. Bobinger, 58, of Stafford, passed away surrounded by family, at Mary Washington Hospital on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. His family is left devastated by his sudden and unexpected passing.

Rich was born to Christa and Otto Bobinger in Augsburg, Germany in August of 1963. He attended Morrison High-School in Illinois, graduating in 1982. Upon graduating high-school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his enlistment, Rich attended technical school where he graduated as an avionics technician. In 1990, while he was stationed in California, Rich met his future wife, Susan, and their daughter, Brittany. Before leaving to a combat zone, Rich and Susan were married in a small private ceremony in Reno, Nevada. After returning home, Rich and his family transferred to Germany where they welcomed two children, Ashlee and Joshua.

Rich bravely served our country during the Gulf War, as well as in other military campaigns. Throughout his service, he earned several achievement medals and ribbons for his outstanding and honorable actions. Rich also received multiple expert marksmanship awards. In 1994, Rich and his family moved to the state of South Carolina and eventually settled in Stafford, VA in 2006.

Throughout life, Rich continued his aviation career and most recently worked as an instructor at the Aviation Institute of Maintenance in Manassas, Virginia. He loved teaching and helping his students on their journeys to become the best aviation mechanics they could be.

Rich earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from Limestone College and graduated in 2005. He also earned an associate’s degree in cyber security from Germanna Community College, graduating with high honors in 2014. Rich was also a proud holder of an A&P and FCC license, as well as an AET certification.

He was a member of the Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge No. 4 and the American Legion Post 55. Rich was an enthusiastic outdoorsman who spent his free time fishing, camping, gold panning, smelting, gardening, building fishing-poles, gem mining, and woodworking. Many of which he shared with his children and grandchildren. He loved anything mechanical, especially working on cars and airplanes.

Rich is survived by his wife, Susan Bobinger; children Brittany Brodufehrer-Bobinger, Ashlee Bobinger, and Joshua Bobinger; grandchildren Nathan Beard, Miles Sprouse, and LilyBee Schmidt; mother Christa Bobinger; siblings Gabriele Konig, Susan Bobinger, and Thomas Bobinger; mother-in-law Esther Brodfuehrer; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Rich was preceded in death by his father, Otto Bobinger.
