Richard Joseph Scanlon

Richard Joseph “Rick” Scanlon, Sr., 63, of Stafford, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2019 at his home.

 Mr. Scanlon was born and raised in Auburn, NY. He was a special education teacher for 38 years prior to his retirement.  While not teaching, Rick could regularly be found on the sidelines of his sons’ sporting events, in the audience at his daughter’s dance performances, and being “Papa” to his grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan who closely followed the New York Yankees and Virginia Tech Hokies. 

Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Patricia “Patty”; his three children, Richard, Jr. (Lindsey) of Fredericksburg, Danielle (David) of Little Rock, AR, and Matthew (Christina) of Ashburn; his brothers, Daniel, III and Ronald; his sister, Beth Anne; and grandchildren Mackenzie and Walter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Marie Scanlon of Auburn,

 The family wants to express their gratitude to the staffs of Right at Home and VITAS Hospice care for their professional and compassionate care of Rick. 

A rosary will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 with visitation following until 8 p.m. at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford. A service will be held at 11 a.m. June 14 at St. William of York Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. 

A gathering of family and friends at Rick and Patty’s home will follow all services.
