Russell Knight

Russell Knight, Sr., 79, of Stafford County, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 31, 2020.

A lifelong resident of Stafford County, shortly after graduating from Stafford High School, Russ began his long career working for the Navy at what is now known as the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren.  He loved his work there as a testing technician which included travel to Texas and White Sands, New Mexico as well as work on Naval ships and Air Craft Carriers.  It was while working in Dahlgren that he found his love for golf playing with a large group of wonderful friends and taking many golf trips to Myrtle Beach and others, as well as playing golf with his son and then later with his grandsons.

Russ loved to garden and grow his own vegetables which he proudly shared with family and friends.  He loved to fish which started as a young boy on Aquia Creek and continued with his grandchildren.  But more than anything, Russ loved his grandkids and was their biggest fan in all their accomplishments and sports, especially baseball where he would watch all their practices and attend as many of their games as he could.  All the neighborhood kids knew him as “grandad”.  He loved his family, admired and respected his son and his friends and, just like his granddaughter, loved just about every dog he ever met.   He will be greatly missed by those he loved and those who loved him.

Russ is survived by his son, Russell Knight Jr. (Bonnie); his grandchildren, Elizabeth Knight, Russell Colin Knight and Joseph Knight; his sister, Elaine Boswell; brother Kenneth Knight; and countless nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Knight; his mother, Nellie Knight; and brother Charles Knight.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of Hughes Home and Fredericksburg Hospice. 

A graveside service is planned for Friday, June 5 in Mount Ararat Cemetery in Stafford.
