Shirley Ann Jewell, 82, had her earthly journey end on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at “the farm” in Spotsylvania.
Mrs. Jewell was born and raised on a farm in King George County. After marrying, she moved to Alexandria and lived there for 57 years. She was a humble and kind woman lovingly called Miss Shirley. Knowing the importance of family, she and James hosted an annual family reunion.
Mrs. Jewell was passionate about gardening and would share the bounty of her labor with neighbors. Mrs. Jewell canned what family and neighbors couldn’t eat; she made the best sweet pickles. She enjoyed watching the wildlife in the fields on the farm; she loved birds, especially the hummingbirds that returned to the feeder each year. Mrs. Jewell was a lifelong Redskins fan; the Skins won every game she attended. She taught her children everything they need to know except how to live without her.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, James Jewell; daughter Deigh Jewell (Dennis Kearns); son James “Jimmy” Jewell; granddaughter Laini Hines; great-grandsons Darby Kellison and Kaleb Jeffrey; siblings Robert Merryman, Helen Green, Ruth Bowie, Alice Houser (Bill), and Judy Harding (Ray); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Murnie and Robert Earl Merryman; sister Betty Ballard; brothers Elmer, Edward, and John Merryman; and son-in-law Joseph Hines.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Interment will be private.
