Sidney Groves McWhirt

Sidney Groves McWhirt, 90, of Fredericksburg passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at home with his loving daughters by his side.

Sidney was born on August 18, 1930 to the late Harry Willard McWhirt and Sarah Belle Groves McWhirt of Stafford. He was the husband of the late Irene Gallahan McWhirt.

Sidney was an avid NASCAR fan and traveled to many NASCAR races. He enjoyed reading his morning newspaper, cooking for his family, having crab feasts, and traveling with his family.

Sidney was a farmer alongside his father until he joined the Army in 1954. He was a PFC and was stationed with 8184 Ordnance Corps at Camp OTSU, Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1956. He then worked for Church and School Installation Company as a traveling carpenter for 18 years. Sidney then acquired his master carpenter license and was a proud member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, LOCAL UBC 00197, retiring in 1995.

Survivors include his daughters, Ruthann McWhirt Copeland (Tim) of IN, Lisa McWhirt Dickinson (Richard) of Stafford, and Shirley Burgess Marquis (Alan) of NC; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Irene; children Rannie Burgess, Ralph Burgess, Mary Thompson, and Delmar Burgess; siblings Willard McWhirt, William McWhirt, Gracie Hazel McWhirt, Frank McWhirt, Edna McWhirt, and Everett McWhirt.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 9, 2021 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Richie Dickinson, Matthew Copeland, Andrew Copeland, Benjamin Copeland, Ricky Burgess, and Jesse Way.
