Tribute

Stuart Lee Taylor, 88, of Spotsylvania County passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021.

Stuart was born on September 13, 1932 to the late Horace and Edna Taylor. He graduated from Spotsylvania High School and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He loved his country and community, where he was a charter member of the Spotsylvania Volunteer Rescue Squad including g serving two years as Captain. Stuart also was active in Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department, he was a former Chief, organized the first Fireman’s parade and assisted in establishing companies 2,3, and 4. He was a life time member of the Fire Department and the only Spotsylvania resident that ever held both roles, Fire Chief and Rescue Squad Captain.

Stuart was a charter member of the Spotsylvania Athletic Association, this committee purchased the land and constructed Spotsylvania’s first football field, turning it over to the public school system in the mid 1960’s. He was a past president of the Partlow Ruritan Club, member of the Spotsylvania Landowners Association and served as an Election Official for many years.  

Stuart was a dedicated employee of the Virginia Department of Highways, serving as a materials Engineer in charge of the nuclear testing program, retiring after 43 years of service. He was a hard worker, a true gentleman and enjoyed the simple things in life, like spending time with his family.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 48 years, Virginia Jett Wheeler Taylor; two daughters, Peggy Wheeler and Terrie Suthard (Thomas); seven grandchildren, Jesse Peek, Michael Peek (Lori), Arritt Wheeler (Lauren), Kristin Burcham (Jimmy), Beth Vanlandingham (Jason), Morgan Suthard (April), and Ashley Haydon. He was so proud of his 21 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Linda Taylor. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Andrea Wheeler; and three brothers, Bryant, Floyd, and Warren Taylor.

His service will be private with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis Tennessee 38105.

We know that Stuart is now resting peacefully in the arms of the Lord, who he served so faithfully from a young man, growing up in Travelers Rest Baptist Church where he remained a member.
