Tribute

Zareh Balian, beloved son, brother, father and grandfather passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 101 years.

Zareh was born on June 4, 1922, in Iskenderun, Turkey where he lived until 1939 when he and his family moved to Beirut, Lebanon. There he began to develop his interest in electronics. He began to work with the French military and learned the Morse code. Becoming more than proficient, he would receive and decode communications from French headquarters under General DeGaulle. After WWII ended, he began to show his talent to the Americans. In 1947, Zareh and his entire family, emigrated to the United States and settled in Detroit, Michigan. He was almost immediately drafted into the US Army and quickly advanced with his communication skills. He ended up stationed in Washington DC where he worked for the Signal Corp Intelligence Agency. After the Army, he stayed in Washington, began his career as a civil servant attaining the level of GS-14, and received the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the highest honor the US Army can bestow upon a civilian. It was in Washington where he met and married Rose Momjian. They settled in northern Virginia and raised two sons, Alex and Richard. In 1971, his work took him to Charlottesville, VA where he finished his career and retired from the federal government. Zareh returned to northern Virginia where he lived until 2021 at which time he moved to Fredericksburg, VA to be closer to family.

Zareh loved to play the accordion and played it very well. He loved entertaining at parties and family get-togethers. He also loved to tinker with his electronics, repairing and rebuilding TVs and radios, and getting his HAM radio license, communicating all over the world with Morse code.

Zareh is survived by his sons, Alex (Karen) and Richard (Brenda); his grandsons Matthew and Christopher (Chelsea); and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Haig and Anna Balian; his brother, Berge; and his sisters, Berjouhi and Flora.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 5 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior at the funeral home. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 11 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit, Michigan where Zareh will be laid to rest alongside his mother, father, and brother.
